APPLE PRODUCTION IN HIMACHAL PRADESH

I am sitting under an Apple tree in my orchard looking at the crispy red fruits hanging up there. It's late June and the Apple season is around the corner in Himachal Pradesh. A time when Apple cultivators harvest their crops and fill their pockets after a full year of hard work.

Apple production is one of the main and growing traditional businesses in many parts of the elevated state. Shimla accounts for the highest cultivated area followed by district Kinnaur, Kullu, and Mandi. Around 80 percent of Himachal Pradesh's fruit economy comes from Apple.

INCEPTION ON APPLE CULTIVATION IN HIMACHAL PRADESH

Apple cultivation in Himachal Pradesh is attributed to the colonial legacy like many other things in Shimla. In the late 1880s, a few Apple trees were planted by the British in Mashobra, a village 10kms away from Shimla, then the summer capital of British India. Later on an American missionary named Samuel Evans Stokes, introduced commercial Apple cultivation in Shimla.
Stokes brought few grafts of Red Delicious Apple variety to Kotgarh village in Shimla, the guy married a Himachali woman, had children, got converted to Hindu and became Satyanand Stokes.

VARIETIES OF APPLE GROWN

There are thousands of Apple varieties available all around the globe. In the late 90s, traditional cultivators in Himachal Pradesh were limited to fewer varieties due to their lack of knowledge and exposure. However, the next generation is quite aware of the trends, techniques and market value thus providing a substantial growth in Apple production and of course crispy red juicy Apples for you. Furthermore, the huge intensification in Apple cultivation has been seen in the past few years. Youngsters are practicing progressively rather than spending hours working in front of a computer screen, they are doing this practical work,  indeed getting good results and also making a career out of it.

The main Apple varieties were:

HOW AN APPLE TREE IS GROWN?

I have always wondered while looking at these beautifully loaded Apple trees that, How it is grown and nurtured? The thought alone is enough to generate curiosity of a youngster like myself. So, I started to gather all the necessary information about Apple cultivation.
Firstly, Apple does not grow in hot areas. It can not stand a temperature above optimum level (21 to 24 degrees Celsius) during it growth and flowering period.
Therefore, it can be grown at an elevation of roughly around 1500 to 2700 meters above the sea level.
It can grow either on Seedlings or as Rootstock. The desirable varieties are grafted on them. The graft or scion is taken from an existing tree and a surgery kind of procedure is done to make a whole new tree. Best time for grafting is in the late winters.

COMMON GRAFTING TECHNIQUES USED:

1.Whip Grafting
This is known as Bench-Grafting. It is done when we have plenty of space on the land. This is done on an undisturbed rootstock.

2.Bud Grafting
This is done by cutting a 1 inch vertical slit into the bark around half inch underneath the bud and then slowly pulling the knife up taking out the cambium layer without damaging the heartwood. The slit looks like a T-shape, now gently lifting the corners where they meet, and sliding in the bud with its tip pointing upwards, ensuring the cambium layers are touching.
